I better be able to identify those two Fort Hill runners. Billy Avey on the left and Jerry Mudge on the right. BTW, the "deer pen" hill in Constitution Park at the end of the race was a killer.

No luck on the Frankfort guys. That was a little before time at Frankfort (they didn't have CC during my time as a student at the school). I'm guessing Bill Avey was Vickey's brother.

Good job with the identification of two of your former runners, Coach Armstrong. Billy and Jerry - both very good people.
Coach Mickey - Billy is the older brother of Vicki. He was without a doubt one of the best distance runners to ever come out of FH. At the state T&F meet his senior year he ran 4:29 and 9:41, placing third in both events. He is now a teacher and basketball coach in San Antonio, Texas.
Did Frankfort have XC when the school opened then disband the program for awhile, Coach Mickey?

Frankfort dropped the xc team sometime after it opened, and then we got them to start it back up for my senior year. Our first year we had like 8 guys, and 2 or 3 girls. The guys did finish 3rd in the state our first year though.

I will also add that I think when we started it back up in the fall of 86 we wore the same singlets.

That's quite an accomplishment for a first-year team, Coach Donnie Mickey. What was your place at the state XC meet?
Here's a bit of trivia related to local high school XC:
Name the four different individuals who won state XC titles in MD over a 4-5 year span. What school did they attend?

Assuming this includes boys & girls only Allegany County schools I can answer this one with 2 lists of individuals with an extra person for each one, that is 5 different individuals within a 4 year span.

All males, Justin. This actually occurred prior to girls running XC in MD. Let me also make what I think is a correction and say that it happened during a time span of four consecutive years.

I was 3rd that year. Not sure of the names, but I know Beall had a ton of good teams, and I believe Denny Albright was the first among a string of champions. Albright, Adams, Blankefield, Winfield all won and then there was like a little break and Dudley won.

Good work, Coach Donnie Mickey...I thought that question would be tougher than that.
Dennis Albright ('74), Dave Adams ('75), John Blankfield ('76) and Derrick Winfield ('77) - all from Beall High School - won individual state XC championships. I could be wrong, but I don't think any other school can make the same claim.
What boys' XC team has the lowest score in the history of the MD State XC Meet? How many points did the team score?
An interesting note about Beall's legendary coach, the late Barney Langan: According to Dennis Albright, Coach Langan used heart rate to dictate what runners did or didn't do during a workout. This was way before it became the accepted norm and a long time before runners wore heart monitors.

Beall scored 18 pts one year I know this because we scored 20 in 01. We thought we had the record, but found out it was only a 4a record. We did however I think we had the only team every to have a sub 17 min team average at Hereford.

Coach Donnie Mickey is right again...the year was 1974 when Beall High School scored the minimum + 3 in the state cross country meet.
Any runner familiar with the XC course at Hereford has to realize what an accomplishment it would be for a team to average sub 17 minutes on that course...what was the spread that day between 1-5 and 1-7, Coach Mickey?
On another note...who can name the three local male runners who won back to back state XC titles? (No looking, please.)

That year we had guys run the following at the state meet with place: 1. 16:39, 2. 16:49, 4. 16:54, 5. 16:56, 8. 17:08, 22. 18:03, and 37. 18:14
As a coach I got to experience alot of great things, but that day is one that stays with me. The meet was over 30 secs after the first guy crossed the finish line.

Dan and Justin are the only 2 that I can remember. There were a bunch of one time winners.
