Periodically, I would like to add a photo as an attachment and see if anyone can identify the runner. For the first photo, who is that masked man (the one with the shades)? Attachments:

Looks like Jason sitting on your shoulder.

Correct - Justin wins round 1.
I honestly thought that one would be somewhat challenging. Were you at that meet as a young lad, Justin?
If anyone has additional photos of runners at an earlier age, please attach them.
I will post another in the near future.

I'm not sure if I was there or not. If it was an FSU Invite at Rocky Gap possibly.
I love the old school pics. Jason's hair looks wild and you both look like you're going after it.
Great idea Coach!

The only question left is who won between you 2?

On that particular day, I believe Jason crossed the line first. We raced against each other a few times during our college days.

Those were some great meets back in the day. You had the college races on Saturday (some on the same day as GAR but later in the day) and the high school area championships on that same course later in the week. That was a fun course to run on. I remember watching some of those very good Frostburg State teams that Coach Brown and my brother ran on in the late 80's early 90's. Lesser, Lawmore, Lang, Adams and the Chavez twins are guys I remember.
As for Jason, I remember seeing him run at both FSU and Elkins. I never imagined that one day he would become part of our local group. Great pic Brownie!

D&E was one of the other places we raced - probably the most challenging XC course in the U. S.
The '90 FSU team placed 13th in the NCAA DIII National Championship Meet and the '91 team placed 18th in the nation.......very good teams, very good times, very good coach (Coach Lewis will be inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame this fall), and all-around very good people.
From a professional and running perspective, it is nice to have a person such as Jason living in this community.

I can't recall the name of the race but it was held in South Cumberland, I believe it was held around Labor Day and the distance was 4 miles. The course went through several streets in South End then out Industrial Blvd. and back. It was directed by none other than Coach Brown. I will take a wild guess at the year- 1990???

You are right, Coach Mickey. The race was the "End of Summer Four Miler," and it was held on Labor Day in '89 and '90. Appropriately, it was sponsored by the Cumberland Hagerstown Building Trades. A total of 92 runners participated in the first race. Smitty ran 20:42, and Paula Bridges won the women's overall in 25:00+. There are some folks in this photo who are still active runners today. If you look closely at the picture to the left you can see a young man in a Frostburg State Cross Country shirt. That is my brother Donnie Mickey. He pioneered running with headphones (which you can see he has on in that picture) way before the advent of the Ipod. I believe royalties are due from Apple Inc.
On the men's side I also see Dan Dawson and Ron Sperry behind my brother. On the women's side I see Joyce Michaels and Paula Bridges, both who still run to this day.
Coach Brown should be commended for his effort in putting on this race. It was a first class event.

George. These are some awesome pictures. I wasn't running back then, but I love to see the history. I think Jason needs to go back to that haircut.

I agree, Coach Mickey - Donnie should be getting royalties from Apple Inc. I also agree with Eric - we should encourage Jason to go back to the "rockin'" haircut and sport it during his next ultra. What do you think, Jason? Okay...look at the photo, identify when and where it was, and let's see if anyone can identify any of the runners in the photo. Attachments:

That is a great picture...my old teammate and one of my best friends to this day Joe Pat Young in the background (he drove in from Wheeling for my 40th birthday party that some of you guys attended). That old Rocky Gap meet was a fun one, there were some good runners on those Frostburg teams. I should revive the mohawk (technically, a 'hawklet' ... mohawk on top with long hair/mullet in the back) for old times' sake, maybe when I retire. Thanks George, keep em coming!
