You got me on this one Brownie!!! My only guess would be an area cross country race in the late 70's. Could the location be at the old golf course on Rt. 51 (the rock??). As for the runners I could not identify anyone.

Coach Mickey is partially correct - The meet was held at the old Fort Cumberland Golf Course, a.k.a. the Rock Pile, located off what was Route 51 and what is now known as Uhl Highway. However, it was not an "Area" meet. The year was either '75 or '76.
Some folks should be able to recognize the individual on the far left.

Hint: Look at the first two letters on the singlet the individual to the far left is wearing...during his collegiate years his singlet probably had the letter "A" on it...today...

...he would favor the letter "S" on the singlets his student-athletes wear.

Good job, Jordan.
Yes, Coach Chris Fox, legendary runner from Martinsburg High School, Auburn University, and now coaching at Syracuse is the runner in the far left of the picture. Fox also holds the record for the GAR 15k. Also, from WikiRun - "Fox ran the mile in 3:59.10, the 5,000m in 13:21, the 10,000m in 27:53, and the marathon in 2:13.40. He ran a 28:32.67 for the 10,000m at the 1995 World Championships."
I can remember watching Coach Fox run 9:15 for two miles at Fort Hill High School Stadium (that's what it was called then, and still a stadium record) in 1977. Later that spring, he ran sub 9:00 for two miles.
The meet was the Cumberland Valley Athletic Association's annual meet in either '75 or '76.
Ted Schoeck and Kenny Keyes of North Hagerstown High School are located close to Coach Fox. Schoeck and Keyes were legitimate 4:30 milers and they placed 6th and 7th in the CVAL Meet that year. (Schoeck went on to finish fourth in the 3A MD State XC Meet his senior year, and was the point guard on NH's state championship BBall team.) Martinsburg runners placed 1st - 5th and 8th and 9th in the CVAL Meet that year. That speaks volumes about how good that Martinsburg XC team was.
An additional bit of trivia related to Coach Fox - What local runner and coach had an "upset" victory over Fox in high school?

Congrats to Coach Donnie Mickey (XC and T&F coach at C. Milton Wright) - he is right.
Vicki Avey Lang graduated from Fort Hill High School where she still holds the 3200 meter record of 11:20. The photo was taken at Rocky Gap State Park probably around '82, '83, '84 or '85.
After high school, Vicki went to Frostburg State University, and she holds the indoor and outdoor records in the 3,000 meter run (10:20+), and she is also a member of two FSU record-setting relay teams (4x800 and DM). Vicki was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2008.
In recent years, Vicki and husband, Phil, also a graduate of FSU, have been successful coaches at Oakland Mills High School in Howard County, MD.

Does anyone recognize this runner? What about this hill that is very, very familiar to most people in this area? What was the race? (A modified version still exist today.) What was the year? Going back a few - Does anyone know of the local runner/coach who "upset" Coach Chris Fox in a high school event? Attachments:

Is it Dan Whetzel?

You are correct, Coach Armstrong.
It is a photo of Dan Whetzel, one of the early members of the QCS, nearing the end of a race that at one time was a ten miler and held in late June. What was the race and where is this familiar hill?
An interesting side story - Dan gave the QCS a whole lot of publicity at one time. There was a photo of Dan, wearing his QCS singlet, being escorted by two marines on the cover of one of the first editions of Running Times. We kidded him a whole lot, and told him he would do anything to get his "picture on the cover." In reality, it was 90+ degrees that day, and Dan, like many others, completed the marathon in dangerous conditions and he was worthy of such an escort.
For those of you who don't know, Coach Armstrong was a very successful marathoner in his day (2:36+), and coached Vicki Avey Lang in high school.

With the above poster in mind, name one of the three runners in the first pack that is seen in this photo and name the race. (No, this is not a photo of Lasse Viren.) Also, please keep in mind that most people did not have a camera with a zoom lens at that point in time. (You need to login to enlarge a photo on this site.) Questions still on the table: 1.) What local runner "upset" Coach Chris Fox in a high school race? 2.) Dan Whetzel was participating in what race? 3.) Where is the hill located? Attachments:

I've got to do some catching up.
Norm beat Fox in HS, I believe Norm was a senior and Fox a freshmen.

You are correct, Justin...good job!
Coach Norm DeRosa defeated Coach Chris Fox in a regional meet in 1975. The meet was held on Coach DeRosa's home track at Fairmont Senior High School. Coach DeRosa was a senior and Coach Fox was a sophomore at the time. Coach DeRosa told me the winning time was in the mid to high 9:40s or low 9:50s.
On a related note, the first time I ever heard of Chris Fox (not by name) was when I was spending a summer with my father at the Harper's Ferry Job Corps Center. One of my friends told me about a kid at Martinsburg South Junior High (I believe that was the school) who was in the 8th grade and could run a 4:47 mile. I told him he was crazy - no 8th grader could run a mile that fast. Well, I learned a few years later that the kid he was talking about was Chris Fox...by that time I had become a believer.
