Price break for Helmstetter's Curve Distance Run on Sunday
LAVALE, Md. -- Entry fees for the Helmstetter's Curve Distance Run scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8 in Allegany County have been slashed by nearly two-thirds and now runners can sign up for a challenging cross country run for as little as $8.
Kevin Spradlin, of the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club, said the entry fees are being discounted for two reasons. The lower fees will help runners better afford a unique competitive opportunity on a private farm. It also might aid in attracting additional runners for either the 12K (7.46-mile) or 6K (3.73-mile) distances. There also is a shorter run of about 1.5 miles for younger or less experienced runners and walkers, the terrain for which is much more novice-friendly.
"The West Virginia high school season just ended, and this could be a tune-up for those planning to run the Battle of the Potomac or Footlocker South Regional later this month," Spradlin said. "For Maryland high school runners whose state meet isn't until Nov. 14, both the 12K and 6K options provide a nice time trial on a course with a hill not to dissimilar than the infamous dip they'll run on at Hereford High School. If somebody likes hills, this is the course for them."
Plans initially were to include a post-race cookout and high-performance race T-shirts, "but in these tough economic times, all the marathon club really wants to do is provide a nice race with a great side being proceeds will benefit Mr. John Helmstetter," Spradlin said.
Instead, runners will receive a free 2010 wall calendar from Running Journal as long as supplies last. Marathon club members and runners ages 17 and under can register for $8 up to and including on race day. Everyone else can register for $10 up to and including on race day. Race start time is 1:15 p.m.
"If registration warrants, we still will have team-oriented competition as well," Spradlin said. "It can be male, female, co-ed or a corporate group, so get your friends and coworkers and enjoy a day outdoors. And family members: bring your cameras. It's a great place to take photos."
Helmstetter, an area farmer for all of his 67 years, lost his 110-year-old barn, of classic Mid-Atlantic bank design, to a suspicious fire in July 2009. Family and friends are helping to build the foundation to rebuild the barn now and railfans who often use the scenic vista provided by Helmstetter's property have coordinated benefit train rides that have raised nearly $30,000.
The majority of all three distances are set on the private farm of Mr. Helmstetter. The start and finish area is beside the Helmstetter's Curve sign on the Great Allegheny Passage trail off of Cash Valley Road between LaVale and Corriganville.
Those runners already registered will receive a refund on race day if present. If not present, they will be sent a check in the mail for the difference.
