New Iron Rail Days 5K announcedInaugural event set for Sept. 19MOUNT SAVAGE -- The historic town of Mount Savage was a bustling mini-metropolis of about 5,000 people about 150 years ago. Most of them worked in the brick, rail or mining industries. Runners of all ages and abilities are able to see where they lived, worked and banked on Saturday, Sept. 19 in the first Iron Rail Days 5K run and 1-mile run/walk. Both events start at 8:30 a.m. with race-day registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 5K (3.1-mile) run is open to anyone of any age. The 1-mile run/walk is open to children and adults who aren't quite ready for a 5K or would prefer to take it easy on that particular day. Both routes finish along Old Row Road and pass through Old Pioneer Park, the Mount Savage Museum and the partially unearthed iron furnace. Entry forms will be available in early June. Registration will open at that time. Proceeds from both the 5K and 1-mile events will benefit the Mount Savage Historical Society. The event kicks off the historical society's two-day festival to celebrate the town's rich history. For more festival information, visit www.mountsavagehistoricalsociety.org. The event is sponsored by the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club, the Mount Savage Historical Society and TriStateRunnur.com For more information on the first Iron Rail Days 5K run and 1-mile run/walk, log on www.mountainMDmarathon.org or call (240) 522-0276. Hey Kevin,
Where else will this course run? If I'm around I will probably jump in and run the race. I'll have to check our marathon buildup for that time, but it definitely sounds like a good idea for the race.

This is a different event than the previously mentioned low-key 5-miler on Mile Lane on Aug. 30, Dan. That's still just $3 for the general public and free for M3 members. Remember, we also might have a 10-mile option that night. The 10-miler would go out Mile Lane and hang a left onto Delbrook (atop Witt Hill) and loop around private property (verbal permission received; currently seeking written permission). Details soon.
For the Sept. 19 Iron Rails Day 5K, we have a couple of options. We're just beginning the permitting process now so the exact route isn't set in stone. To make things much easier in this planning process, we'll probably stay on the school side of route 36 - which means a couple of hills in the course. Email me and I can tell you what I'm planning; however, I'm hestitant to put the preferred route in public as someone might take that as a "promise."

Oh, and if neither event fits into your training schedule, maybe you'd consider volunteering...

I should be game for both events as a participant or a volunteer. The Mile-Lane 10 miler would be a good race. I would love to know what I could crank out there. However, it will be fun to do a five-miler out there as well. Either option is good with me.
Hope all goes well the planning. I'll talk to you more about these races sometime this summer and see if you need any assistance. Thanks for the updates. Talk to you soon.
