All, I'll make this quick and easy... I have a question about a nagging injury I have had for the past 4 weeks. second metatarsal- feels like it is fractured, but my foot isn't swollen nor is the pain getting any worse/any better.
took 3 days down, back at it full swing... it doesn't hurt when I run, but hurts like hell just walking around. It also seems like the pain in migrating upwards (toward my mid foot).
any ideas? thoughts? suggestions?

Mr. Wiggins,
I am going through a stretch of tendinitis in the top of my foot. It was swollen, but nothing major. I had to take a couple of days off. It only bothers if we finish and stand around for a while. When I run it is no problem.
Maybe this is the issue - hopefully that is all that is. Pop some of that fantastic Ibuprofen!

Many moons ago I experienced a similar injury, Jordan. There was no swelling. I can now surmise that it was probably the onset of a stress fracture. I took off a few weeks and it healed.
There is the possibility that the migrating pain you are experiencing could be an indication the fracture is going through the bone (if that is what it is) - not just a surface fracture.
I would do one of the following: 1.) Take some time off to see if that helps; or 2.) Get an xray to know for sure what is happening.
I know as a runner taking time off is a "tough sell."

Neither Luke nor I experienced any swelling with our stress fractures. Similarly, my foot hurt under my laces for a number of weeks. I blamed the laces and kept running. Finally, I ran in severe pain for a week, took a day off and tried to run the Tuesday session. I had to get a ride back to campus.
George is right but I would change the or to an "and". Get the x-ray. That way you will know for sure.

I've been lucky, but I've had that pain a couple times over the years, but each time it was usually fixed by loosening up my shoe laces and it would go away within a week or 2 of running. It it would have lasted for 4 weeks I would have gotten it checked out.

the prognosis of the diagnosis the x ray shows no broken foot. but the Dr. said the symptoms are consistent with a stress fracture (she said most stress fractures don't show up on x rays)...
so it looks like 3 weeks in the pool..
great fun!

I think that a stress fracture only shows up on an x-ray once it begins to "knit". The best option is to always get an MRI if you can and it will show up as a "hot spot".
Good luck in the pool - don't get on the Michael Phelps plan though!
