I was very lucky recently and a lady from the Patriot League called our coaches to see if they knew of anyone who had "any interesting backgrounds" when it came to running. My coaches thought that since I was writing a journal about the season that it would be nice to talk to me. However, I guess she didn't quite hear me over the phone. Her replacement word is actually quite funny once I think about it. I am getting extra nervous for Saturday. Send some of your senses of relief from home up my way so I maybe won't feel so scared at 5k when I realize that the race is really happening. Thanksgiving is coming. I am ready to get fat. DAN

Dan,
Awesome article. Truly fantastic. At MCM and New York I knew I was in shape (i.e. ‘the hay was in the barn’). So I was most nervous just waiting for the gun. I just want to be free to run. That is what’s so cool about running. The freedom to succeed or fail, it’s all up to you. For both races I just wanted to keep reeling people in and make them hurt more then I was. Each time I caught another runner and they tried to go with me I would not let them rest. The bad part about that strategy, I end up running alone for large stretches of the race and then I have a crappy 10K to finish.
You are in great shape, just let it happen. The race doesn’t start until 5k and you are a beast in the second half. Have fun with this, you will have this memory for life, so go get some.

Remember, to really race well, you have to believe in the training that you've done. You've talked to me very excitedly about your workouts. Look back at that log - that is the tool to show you how well you will race!

Charlotte and I will be coming up for the race. I can't wait to see you guys go out there and do your best. From my experience the best way for me to avoid getting nervous is to get focused. If I'd try to get distracted and laugh off the nervousness I'd end up more nervous at race time because it would all hit me at once. I found the best way to fight the nerves is to be focused on your goal and confident you can achieve it. Visualization always helped me a ton, I would visualize my next race before going to bed at night. Every step from the gun to the finish, splits, places, everything in there. I'd close my eyes and see it and by the time I hit the tape I'd be sleeping like a baby. I really got away from this in college and had real relaxation problems. I've since started doing this with other things in my life, visualizing presentations and things at work. It works like a charm every time.
