Need info. on dealing with Pyriformis syndrome or, at least, that is what I think I have developed. I have a pain deep behind both glutes, the right side is worse than the left side. The pain gets worse the longer I sit. It radiates down the outside of my leg and down into my calf. I get a burning sensation in my calf from this. Is this Pyriformis syndrome? If so, what to do? I am in PT now and it seems to be helping but, as a triathlete, I want to get better now. I have decreased my training load and am wondering, should I stop training altogether for a couple of weeks which would really set me back or just hope for a slow, continued improvement. Thanks.

Zap one of the group's runners, screen name "woody" about this. He likely will tell you there is no quick fix to this and that time is a primary factor in healing on this one. Good luck. I believe he took a number of weeks completely off, but he will confirm.

You will probably have to quit running for a few weeks. You should be able to swim still and I was riding some to stay in shape but I would keep that to a minimum and really stress the swimming. Perhaps aqua jogging would be ok you would just have to try it to see if it hurts your leg. I developed this syndrome a while back and am still not completely over it because I was trying to run through it. Taking a few weeks off from running may set you back for now, but it will really help you in the future.

hit some extra time in the water, but stay away from frog-style kicks.

I have a similar problem. Sitting is very painful in both legs/gluts. I do have a definete weakness in my hamstrings when I do the exercises listed in the attached article. I especially notice it when doing single leg curls on Nautalis type equipment. My problesm stems from a nasty case of plantar faciatiis and the way I treated it. I've had the problem for about a year now and I have decided to fore go this racing season to heal up. I've been exercising my hamstrings a good bit following the exercises described in the attached article and adding some of my own. I also do light running at a 9+ min/mile pace and only 3 miles at a time. I did start feeling much better in March and did the Great Escape 5K. BIG MISTAKE. Put me way back and in a lot of pain. Thanks to everyone for their comments, suggestions, wisdom on Pyriformis syndrome. I have been in PT for 4 weeks now and my PCP suggested an MRI of my lower back. I thought since I had no back pain, that it was ridiculous but went nonetheless. They identified two bulging disks, L-4/L-5 and L-5/S-1. The medical folks now think that is what is causing my pain and weakness in my legs. If any one has any thoughts on bulging disks and their impact on running, treatments, etc. Please enlighten me.
