today was the first time i've really measured my progress since being injured on march 16th.
i was supposed to do a 3 mile tempo on our course, take about a minute break, and then finish with an 800 on our course.
the first mile went well in 5:23, and then i started breathing real heavy. i struggled to run 5:49 and then 6:06. 17:18 for three miles and i've never felt more exhausted after a workout! i came back in the 800 and run 2:35, which was better than i was expecting.
i still think i am in shape, but my legs were not pleased to run so fast after a near four week hiatus. i will try a 5k this weekend at moravian in a low-key meet and just try to get to the finish line. if all continues to go well, i will run either the 5k or 10k at patriots. i dont know yet. being healthy is the number one priority, and i dont want to screw up summer and fall for a slow 5k or 10k that wont really do anything for me.
i will keep you posted, but for now, things are going along slowly but surely. i am hoping i just need maybe one more week to start feeling like myself again. thanks for all your support through this, and good luck to our boys as they head to beantown. it will be mighty exciting!!

I thought that you still seemed pretty fit when you were in. I think that you may surprise yourself this weekend. Give me a buzz and let me know how you did.

Hang in there Dan. Cross training is good, but it will take a little bit for everything to click for running. Just stay focused and don't freak out.
Good luck and have fun at Moravian. When I've come back from injuries I always looked at it as just being happy to be able to be running, enjoy it.

here is the latest update on the return road to glory:
last saturday i entered the 5k at the moravian greyhound invite. it was about 9000 degrees (really like 90- it was awful) and they set up a football water hose thing to shoot water out into lane one for the whole 5k.
somehow i ended up taking the lead going out and our guys (lehigh entered like 7-8 guys, mostly younger) wanted to get out comfy in the heat. well, it was a little too comfy as we were out in 81. that is the slowest ive gone out since like 10th grade, no joke. anyway, i led most of the first mile in about 5:05, and then other guys on our team took it. i made it to 6 laps and decided to call it after 2 miles. i wasn't really hurting, but i was getting tired in a hurry and i feared another mile in the heat would screw things up unnecessarily.
so i rolled through two miles in 10:16 and called it a day. it wasnt pretty and it wasnt superfast, but it was about as good as i could have hoped for about 3.5 weeks of no running and only one 35-40 mile week of recovery.
tuesday i tried another tempo run. this one worked out better, and i feel i am nearly back to my form. i ran from miles three to five and backwards from four to two on the 8k course (for those of you familiar with it) and ran mile splits of 5:30, 5:25, 5:47, 5:43 for a 4 mile time of 22:25. it was a good day. i was happy to hit pretty close to my normal tempo pace (5:36 vs. 5:30) running by myself.
so i will try one final tempo at home this weekend (probably on the depot trail (any takers?) in the form of 4-5 miles at 5:30-5:40 pace.
then, i will hop in the 10k at our conference meet next friday at navy and see what these legs can really do. it is amazing to think that i am wrestling with the idea of a 10k PR after pretty well scrapping the season. it is still one day at a time, but things are looking up at the moment.
i cant wait for the furnace this summer, either. if the 10k goes horribly awry or just doesnt satisfy my appetite for racing, i will surely try to come back with a vengeance on the hills of lonaconing.
i know that the marathon crowd is recovering (and deservedly so, mind you), but i wouldnt put it past jaron to come out and tag along. anyone else is welcome to come too on saturday morning as i try to sort through what is left of my outdoor season.
