From what I have heard, the Northern administration is concerned that they do not have enough money for travel to meets. Because of that fact, they will not be fielding a team this year. However, they will allow those interested to run as individuals in a "Northern" singlet, but even if they have enough kids to field a complete team, they will not compete as a "team". In my opinion, the administration is simply not designating this a "team" sport because they would then have to pay money to support it (travel, food, singlets), but if they only allow them to run as individuals, then the school does not have to worry about paying for anything.

That's a shame, but there is a good side to it, in that the individual runners have complete freedom in choosing which meets to run and when they race.
I don't agree with what they are doing, I was just trying to pick out the good part to the situation.

Don't quote me on too much of this - I don't know how much is true, but this is the lowdown on the Northern situation. They supposedly could not find a coach to take the position. At the end of track season, they had a coach lined up but apparently he changed his min and no longer wants the position. They do have a parent who is willing to oversee the individuals and take them to meets and act as their coach. Unfortunately, he is also the soccer coach at Northern. I don't know how much of his time he can give to cross-country.
I have been wondering if there is a deadline to submit a team or coach to the MPSSAA. If there is and Northern has missed it, then I would assume that they don't have an "official team". I don't know if this would disqualify them from MPSSAA events (regionals and state championships) or not.

Email from Zach Bittinger
Hey Darrell,
Just wanted to let you know that we have now got a CC team at Northern. It is only a boys team for now. Nine runners. I will send you a schedule as soon as I get it put together.
Zach
Way to go Northern

That is exciting. If they have nine boys, that is more than Beall and Westmar combined. Glad to see there is a definite interest up there. Hopefully, they can help Western Maryland dominate at the state meet.
