gentlemen:
i began the quest for greatness today with lehigh LD's first true workout....the assignment was as follows:
5 x 1 mile at a pace 15-20 secs per mile slower than your current estimated 5k per mile pace....1 min rest in between each repeat- to be run over the entirety of our 8000m cross country course
so on hearing this, i think that we should be running 5:05-5:10's (i was planning on trying to break 15 this weekend, and 15:00 5k works out to 4:48 per 1600- 4:48 plus 15-20 seconds equals 5:03-5:08 per mile)....i looked at my coach rather incredulously, and i guess i wasn't the only one who thought this task might be a little difficult
then i realized he is only hoping for us to run 15:15-15:20 this weekend, which is like 4:55 pace per 1600- despite all of this, he told us to run between 5:20 and 5:30 per mile
the splits were as follows: 5:20, 5:17, 5:20, 5:23, 5:12 (short on the last mile by about 45 meters, so more like 5:20)
the workout ended up being pretty easy, i guess- the minute rests were just enough to catch my breath but not enough to really do any sort of jogging- we just stood in place at the mile marker and yelled at each other to keep working hard- we had a pack of about 6 up front that ran those splits, and the rest of the guys were 10-15 seconds per mile behind everyone
i dont know what this will translate to this weekend once i get ready to dance the 25 lap tango, but we will find out soon enough
on a lighter note, my classes this semester prove to be rather enjoyable- i am taking two fundamental design classes- one for concrete construction, and the other for steel construction- both will be useless to my predicted profession unless i decide to build allegany county's first 100 story skyscraper, but that's not the point- my concrete teacher is a genius- he said that his goal for the class is to get us to leave at the end of the semester saying, "i'm gonna go home and tell my honey, "honey, we are gonna build our house out of reinforced concrete because it is the coolest material in the world"- in my world of running geeks and engineering nerds, i may just have found my new hero- my steel teacher is a grumpy old man who appears to have hailed from somewhere deep in the bowels of switzerland- i think he also could have been a former KGB- he smokes the pipe like it is his job (it isnt though), and you can smell this guy from about 200 yards out- he leaves a trail of deliciousness wherever he goes that can be detected for hours afterward- he started the class with a slideshow and the last slide was of a pretty typical cable stayed bridge- he basically told us the class would be a boring, wasteful, piece of crap because it was like wanting to play chopan on the piano and getting stuck doing finger exercises- so i dont know what to expect- he promised us a tour of the new middle school that is rising up next to the campus at an alarming rate, but i doubt that he comes through
in other news, we had to walk like penguins and ducks at practice in an attempt to make our shins and lower legs stronger and less susceptible to injury- despite having 20 other teammates to watch/laugh at during this undeniably amusing act, i could think of only one person who i would have enjoyed watching- the incredible, edible david mertz- i can only imagine such fine drillwork would do nothing but add to his otherwise amazing repertoire of skills- though his current running style is flawless, i feel as if a few extra drills per day might give the group enough material to keep the jokes coming for at least the next three months- let me know if you are interested, dave, and i will send the drills your way
and now, it really is time for bed- tomorrow is my first double of 5 and 10- though i know the mileage fiends scoff at such mediocrity, i am currently less than thrilled at the prospect...
