I'm not a huge HR monitor user. I got one a long time ago. My Dad sold them at the bike shop and I got a top end Polar way back then. I miss the perks of having a bike shop. It was the state of the art back then. I still have it. I found when I used it I would end up looking at it all the time and overall the enjoyment of my runs would go down. Most of the time it wasn't really showing me anything new, more reinforcing what I had already knew.
If you are going to use one I would urge you to use it "right". That is find your true max HR and use it, not some guess. Use the ranges seriously. I can see the advantages of them for tempos and easy runs, but I just don't like to be strapped to something while I run.
