History of QCS Circa 2007 and beyond

To all:

As you may or may not know, I am something of a pack rat. I can not throw away anything that had some value at any point in my life. I just can't do it. I just gathered all my old shoes and I must have had 20 pairs of old running shoes sitting in my closet. I got rid of 8 or 9 and that is all I could muster.

Anyway, my magpie-like tendencies spread to the record-keeping area. So far this year, I have managed to write down what has happened every day (it is not a diary, whatever you might say- I choose to emasculate myself in many ways, but this, however, is not one of them) save for a few days around finals (it was worth it- somehow I pulled out a 3.71 for the semester! okay enough bragging...).

I think it would be equally as cool to record all of our runs together this summer in a log book of some sort. I propose a spreadsheet in which we can write the date, place, time, weather, and route of our runs. We can also write who was there, how long we ran, and if there were any major highlights.

For example:

DATE: June 4, 2007
DESCRIPTION: First Summer Run of 2007
PLACE: Depot Trailhead, Frostburg
WEATHER: too hot- around 85 at 6:00PM

RUNNERS: Jaron, Rob, Tommy, Mertz, Jeremy, Mike, Jimmy, Woody, Dennis, Marc, Dan, Matt D., Coach D., Colby, Luke, Chris M., etc., etc.,
etc......

ROUTE: Out to trestle and back (8-9 miles)

NOTES: Jimmy got attacked by a coyote on the way out and we made him wait out in the field until we were done. He got shot at by those creepy guys who do target practice out there, but that's only because he had on a camouflage Pitt Panthers T-shirt that attracted their attention. Cool.

etc etc etc etc etc

I think this would be cool because I love hearing Dennis tell stories of the good old days when the "old crew" would punish runs out on Christie Rd and thereabouts. This way, we can pass on the stories to Colby, Luke, their children, etc., about all the things we encounter.

If there is interest, I will make up the spreadsheets and bring them to the runs. I will pass some out to everyone so that at least one person has one for every run in case I am not there all the time.

I will type them all up and record them in a file so that it's electronically saved, too. Maybe Darrell can even put it up here on the site so everyone can see that the QCS group really does meet in the summer.

What do you think? Am I just a packrat?

Sounds like a good idea. I just don't want to have to carry my notebook when I run. I know - we can make Marc carry all of the notebooks. No wait, that wouldn't work - after all I am the Striders secretary, so I guess I have to take notes on all of the runs.

dan would you be able to just send the spreadsheet through e-mail or through a link? than everyone could fill them out and send to you via e-mail. No typing necessary.

though I would not be there it would be cool to do it also.

Jordan:

The only way you will not be allowed to participate is if the pace of your training runs becomes faster than the race pace of more than 75% of our group.

I think it is great you are going to Syracuse. Like the old saying- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I know you didn't try to fix it in the first place with Coach Fox leaving, but I think this is the best decision for you. Embrace this last year. Tell Coach Fox to come to Lehigh to race!

I will send out the email spreadsheet to you once I get it made. I don't have an email for you now though since the Auburn one is expired maybe? I don't know. Let me know where you want it sent.

when does your summer training start?
I think I will be in town for a few days in the begining of august but I'm assuming you will be gone already?

Jordan:

Summer training started yesterday with 7 miles. I am at 40 this week and will progress slowly up to about 80 by the time we get back in early August. The first week of August I will be in Ocean City, MD with my family. Then, I will be home for a few days, but then it is up to Maine with my teammates for a week of training before camp starts.

I am sure we will end up running together if I am around when you are in.

our wonderful rabbit went through in 2:02. by 1200 meters I called it in man. \

4:07 I think. wow huh? anything that could have gone wrong did.

I think the results I saw said 4:08.52.

That sucks about the race, man. There were some good guys in there, but how did a 3:46.7 not get you in the fast heat?

I am up at 5AM everyday to be in work at Oakland by 6:30. Jaron only commands early runs on Sunday mornings, as you are aware when you are in town. Most of our runs will be on evenings after everyone is off work.

no I'm not getting into anymore races.
something isn't right man... my race results do not justify my workouts.
I'm doing things I never thought possible. Probably not sub 4 stuff but you know close to 4 min. workouts.

just going to take some time down. and start running miles.

where are you working this summer?

I don't know what it is like to be in 4 minute shape or better, but I know what you mean about the workouts...

That is just tough to deal with. A few weeks down and then a new start of things (Syracuse should be great for you) and I think you will start to do what you want. Who knows?! I hope you are having fun at least.

This summer, I am working at Century Engineering in Oakland for Justin's father-in-law. Justin referred me and got me a great job and I have been learning a lot so far. It is a long drive, but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

you got it man. It's very tough to deal with. Makes running unenjoyable.

I don't know dan, I feel like I've reached my limit. Which is had to admit, but I think I'm there.

Is justin in MD yet? I know he thought about moving up there. when and if he does you need to get him running again. Sounds like your in a good place. take advantage.

As far as I know, Justin is still trying to get up here into MD but doesn't know when it will happen. Justin, has anything changed since the last time I talked to you?

Jordan, there have weeks at school following bad races where I just don't like it. All it takes is one good race or workout, though, and then the sky is the limit once again. I hate trying to get out of those funks though. But for you to say you are at your peak, I must disagree. With solely an outsider's point of view, I feel like you have steadily improved since you have been in college and gotten really close to doing some extraordinary things on top of your already stellar accomplishments. I'd say make the most of your year at Syracuse and really buy into the collegiate system for one more year. Then, evaluate and decide where you want to go from there. I think it will be pretty clear for you by then.

This situation here at home is good. Last night at the depot we had 11 guys meet to run. Terrific. I love having big groups to run with because you know you will be missed if you don't show up. What an incentive.

On a side note, I sent the first two days of runs to Darrell and the template to Jordan so hopefully we can some of the runs up on this website soon and people can see what we have been doing.
