Dennis, Just checking in. With 11 days to go, how is the training going? I checked last years stats and you can easily be in the top 15 or higher.

Rob,
Training has been going well. I dropped back to 18 on Sunday, I'll do mile repeats on Wednesday then cut back gradually from that point. I hope that I get better weather than you and Jaron. It makes a big difference in the longer races. How's your recovery going? Sounds like the start of the race was a mess on Sunday?Take Care.
Dennis

Just wanted to say good luck to Dennis Mickey and Matt Barnes at Richmond on Saturday. Dennis, I think you have a very good shot at reaching your goal and then some. Just run like you usually do. Be smart early and get in that smooth rhythm. Have a great race guys!

Good luck guys. Travel safe and remember the "pride of finishing the race last forever, the pain of running the race will last a day".

It doesn't look like Dennis and Matt are going to get the most ideal day. Winds are supposed to be steady at 5-10 mph. That isn't too bad, but the temp at 8AM is supposed to be 54 degrees and rise to 64 by 10AM. That is a pretty warm day for November, plus there is a possibility of rain in the evening so it should be pretty humid in the morning as well. I think they both know how to deal with it though and hopefully they can both stay well hydrated. I'll post what I can find on here before I head to Baltimore tomorrow. I will miss the end of the marathon, but hopefully I can get some early splits for Matt and Dennis.

Well, Richmond is only giving splits times at Half and 20 miles. Right now the clock is at 1:25 and not even the leaders have any split times up. Unfortunately, I have to leave now for Baltimore, but thought I'd let everyone know why there are no updates on the board here.

Just got an update. Dennis was at 1:18:41 at the Half. Looks like he is in position to run under 2:40, maybe 2:36 range!!!

This was a race I was really excited for. The last 2 weeks of my training I felt fitter than I have for a long while. Gun goes off and I feel great. Miles 1-10 are fairly flat and tree lined so I ran in the shade (59:42 at 10). I was hitting 5:55-6:05 on every mile and felt super. I hooked up with another master runner named Chris at 6 and we decided to work together. At 10 the course starts a gradual climb from 10-13 and you lose the shade. I stayed comfortable and still hit splits in the low 6's feeling great. It was at that point that Chris pulled away.
13-16 I continued to feel good and my splits were nice and even in the low 6's high 5's. I was hovering around 6 flat pace for an average so I felt a 2:37-2:38 was within reach. Mile 17 was the point in which I started to feel a little rough, I hit 6:11. At 18 the wheels started to come off, I hit 6:26 and really began to struggle. At 20(2:01.30) I was done, at that point I didn't think I would finish, I had nothing left.
Miles 20-26 can only be described as the most painful experience I have ever felt at any point in my life. I had held 5th place through out the whole race and at 23 people started passing me and I lost 5 places in the last three miles. People passed me and I could do nothing. I went from running low 6's to mid 6's to 7's then to 8 minute miles. At 25.5 I started getting cramps in my hamstrings and thought I might need to walk but I changed my stride (which was a shuffle anyway) to struggle in at 2:48. With that time I can't believe I was second master. My buddy Chris ran 2:38 for fourth overall (told me his pr was 2:27).
Other than my disappointing race Richmond is a very nice marathon. You have great crowd support and the post race party is nice. The course has it's hilly sections but on the right day you can run a good time. Thanks to Jaron and Rob for all the long runs. Also thanks to Smitty for making the trip down to Richmond to run the 8k and lend support. (I saw Smitty at 23 and almost asked him for a ride back to the finish). Up next should be Matt Barnes and his report.

Dennis, I'm sorry that things didn't quite end the way you wanted. We all know what kind of shape you are in - 2:01 at 20 miles is great!!! I don't think that training had anything to do with the wheels coming off. You were ready! I feel that weather wise, you had the worst day than any of us. I find it very tough to put in 4-6 months of training for one day and then the weather that day is not right for fast times. Anyway, I think that you had a good race and I hope that you are glad that you did it. It was very nice of Smitty to go down for support - that truly helps out a lot. Seeing John Altobello in Chicago was a huge lift for me!
I think that you should be proud of what you accomplished. How many years has it been since you ran a marathon? And you swore you would never do one again. I think that putting in all of those long runs and miles is what it is all about. Running the marathon and doing well is just icing on the cake. And speaking of cake, head over to the Creamery today for some Cake Batter ice cream! You deserve it!!!

Just got back home. Stayed with my sis for the weekend....anyway, here's my view of the day yesterday.
Every day last week I looked at the weather and every day it was calling for warmer weather. Got to the start about an hour before the gun, and it was comfortable...too comfortable for the beginning of the marathon, maybe about 60. I headed to the front of the pack and found Dane Rauschberg (sp?) who's doing Fiddy2 (www.fiddy2.org for more info), and was able to catch Dennis for a quick good luck before the start, then headed back around the 3:30 pace group. It took about 2 miles for things to sort out and start running comfortable, but the miles kept clicking off fast, going about 7:30-7:40. I kept telling myself to hold back, otherwise it probably would've been aout 7 flat. As Dennis already said, the crowd support and especially the area along the James River (~6-9 miles) was absolutely beautiful. I hit 10 miles still feeling good at 1:15:20, but the hills were to come. All I kept hearing about Richmond is how friendly it is and all, but noone really ever mentioned the hills. It seemed from mile 12-17 (and then in spurts after that), there was a lot of uphill. That, combined with the sun and heat made for a bad combo. 13.1 in ~1:39, much faster than expected, but still felt good enough and confident enough at that time to say I could break 3:30. My girlfriend Kathy, sis, and her friend were waiting at ~16.5 and I was able to keep running till mile 17, but I felt the wheels coming off. At that point I entered survival mode. Every mile therein I walked the first 5 minutes and then ran the rest of the mile. It wasn't pretty, but I made it in. Overall, I'm not disappointed with all things considered...my training, the weather, the course. The people along the course were great, and the course was pretty enjoyable if you knew what to expect. I'm sore today, but physical damage isn't bad, one decent blister, and 3 small ones. Left foot a little sore on top from shoes tied a little too tight, but I should be able to bounce back and get training for Disney soon. I'll chalk this up to a good 17 mile long run and long 9 mile cool-down!! A huge Congrats to Dennis for his 2nd place master's finish! splits (for those interested): 1: 7:40 2: 7:28 (15:09) 3:7:33 (22:43) 4: 7:39 (30:19) 5: 7:32 (37:54) 6: 7:31 (45:25) 7: 7:17 (52:43) 8: 7:39 (1:00:22) 9: 7:25 (1:07:47) 10: 7:33 (1:15:20) (starting some uphill here) 11: 7:53 (1:23:13) 12: 7:38 (1:30:51) 13: 7:32 (1:38:24) (1/2 about 1:39:10) 14: 7:19 (1:45:43) 15: 7:23 (1:53:07) 16: 8:01 (2:01:09) 17: 8:44 (2:09:53) 18: 12:47 (2:22:41) 19: 8:21 (2:31:02) (not sure about these last 2 miles...I don't remember running a whole mile after hitting 17) 20: 10:04 (2:41:07) 21: 10:17 (2:51:24) 22: 11:06 (3:02:31) 23: 10:52 (3:13:23) 24: 10:50 (3:24:14) 25: 11:34 (3:35:48) 26: 13:42 (3:49:30) (walked 10 minutes in this mile) 26.2: 1:51 (3:51:22)
