Being the new guy, I began wondering what the incentive to join the Striders might be. I mean, I'm happy enough to pay $15 each year (beginning this year) and look forward to well-organized races and a great club website, but...
I know about club newsletter, as well as the RRCA's FootNotes. Am I missing something? Do Striders get discounted race entry fees? Some clubs offer that.
Not trying to stir a pot. I've enjoyed what I've experienced since Thanksgiving. Just thought I'd ask for more information. Thanks.

Kevin,
I can think of a couple things beyond just supporting the local running club, one being you are entered in the race series points competition, and the other is the yearly banquet. I'm not sure if there is still a family picnic, but I think there may have been one of those in years past too.

See? Things I didn't know of. I figured that might be the case. Thanks.

Kevin may have a good idea on getting more members with the discount for QCS races. Maybe $2? I don't think it's a lot or enough to put a dent in the race directors budget, but enough of an incentive to get some people to join. Maybe it's been discussed at the meetings I don't go to...what are some other views?

I"m most familiar with the Westminster Road Runners Club. Because of my unfamiliarity with the Striders here, I can't compare the two, though I perceive the two are different in size, intent and organization. The WRRC sponsored (i.e. all aspects of race mgmt) 21 races (including the Main Street Mile and Bachman Valley Half Marathon) in 2007 and helped with 6 others. Most of the 21 (about 19 of them) are pretty darn low-key, though, with a general range of finishers between 13-and 30. The MSM (271 in fast heat, XX in kids' heat) and the BVHM (163 finishers) are the club's largest - and most expensive, topping out at $7 apiece. THe WRRC regular race fees for the other 19 races are $2 nonmember and $1 member. Over the course of a year, a member can save more than the cost of an individual or student membership. Prizes are very low-key, and usually have something to do with food (pizza, pies, ice cream, cookies, etc.). It is nice, though, having a discount when you show up. Anyway, that's the skinny on the WRRC. But the Striders here clearly have some things more established/organized (certainly not a bad thing)...

Since, I'm a club officer, I guess I can weigh in on the discount matter. The fees for all races are typically determined by the race director. The entry fee goes to cover insurance, tee-shirts, food, all that good stuff. There are 4 "official Striders races" These are the Snowflake Chase, Main Street Mile. Great Allegany Run, and Moonshine 10k. It seems that the Main Street Mile and the Moonshine are more controlled by the officers. The Snowflake Chase and Great Allegany Ruin seem to be their own entity. The idea of a discount for Striders members would probably only happen for the 8 races that make up the Points Circuit. The only problem with this is that we rotate which races are in the circuit each year. It would be kind of like saying "Congrats, you made it into the circuit, but now you have to possibly take a financial hit."
However, I think that this does warrant a discussion and I can bring it up at the next Striders meeting, which by the way if anybody wants to attend is on January 8 at 7:30PM at Kelly's Bar in Lonaconing. Feel free to come and share any ideas that you have.
