I agree with your assessment of Ryan's fitness. I would put him at low 9:40's or even in the upper 9:30 range. If he can run that last lap under 70 at 10:05 pace, then he is in great shape. I really think that even if it goes out in 5:00-5:02 that he can easily run under 10 minutes. The 4x800 should be a good race as well. Both Alco and Northern do have a shot, but I think Harford Tech is the team to beat. They ran 8:20 earlier this year and 8:28 to win their region by like 14 seconds. Plus, they have a 2:00 leg, one thing that all of the other teams do not have.

Thanks guys. The relays really surprised me, when looking at regular season results I usually don't look at them, but at regionals I usually do just because usually the local times are slow in the regular season. It would be nice to have ALCO win the 4x800.
I've never seen Ryan run, but just from his XC times it seems like he should be able to run in the 9:40's, but my personal opinion is that it is really tough to run 20 seconds faster than your PR all of a sudden. I think Zach's opinion is right that under these circumstances he'll need a fast first mile. From personal experience if you're running a string of 10:00 3200's and you go out in 5:00, you'll just end up running in that comfort zone, it's hard to break through and negative split. I ran 2 years of 10:00 3200 and I didn't break through until Coach ordered me to go out in under 4:50. Once I broke through though the times came down really fast.

Attempted to go to the State meet yesterday. I left Frostburg at 12:10 and hit Hanthingy (exit 3) at 1:00 - then by 1:57 I was at exit 9. Complete gridlock with no end in sight. At this point, I'm still 80 miles from Baltimore with another 20 on the Beltway from there and about 3 miles on Cool Spring Lane. I had no idea how long I was going to have to sit there in traffic before it broke free, but I realized that at my best I would hit the Beltway just a little before 3:30 and last time I got there that late on a Thursday, I sat there for an hour as well. So I got off the exit at mile 12 and drove back home. I had a terrible morning at work and then the traffic situation just topped it all off. Especially since I had got stopped at mile 5 and only at mile 11 was there any sign showing any indication of what was going on. The sign said "Right Lane Closed 1 Mile" I really don't think that was done very well. Essentially, it is a less than 1 minute warning that the Interstate will be cut down to one lane in a mile and this on the Thursday before Memorial Day. Complete Craziness! And not a lot of fun - at least I could listen to DC 101 for an hour.

I think everybody from our area got caught up in the traffic. apparently there was construction at mile 12 and then and accident at mile 9 that had an oil spill. The 3200 was an interesting race. Went out much slower than I had though. 5:01-02 through the first 1600. Everybody together at that point. Carney sort of made a move on lap 5 and dropped a couple of guys. Still a large pack. Chris Mills of Western took over the lead with 1k to go. Adams swung around Bowser and he and mills quickly had 5 meters on Ryan. With 800 to go those two started kicking. Ryan wasn't able to respond until 400 to go. In the end Ryan ran 64.high on the last lap and caught Mills but not Adams. Adams won with a 9:53 adn Ryan was second at 9:57. Adams ran a really smart and well-thought out race. He laid in the weeds until 800 to go and then looked really good.

Thanks for the rundown Zach. Ryan can be happy with getting under 10:00 and not having that lurking behind him in the off-season.
It sounds like the 1600 will be a good one, maybe for once guys will go all-out and not over-think these races and put down some fast times.
