Okay, so I'm finally going to post something inappropriate, but I think with the cold weather it is definitely something to talk about. I'll try and be as discrete as possible so as not to offend somebody.
So, this goes back to my conversation with Rob on Saturday and his incident on a run that caused him massive amounts of pain and then to eventually turn to "the sock". Obviously, it was from exposure to the cold - not that his buddy was exposed, but it was definitely cold!
So then at the dinner on Sunday, JT's parents told me about him coming home from last Tuesday's run and they found him laying in the shower. His Dad said that he thought that JT wasn't wearing enough clothes around his nether-region and really did some damage there. So Jackie and I had a good laugh about JT almost freezing his chestnuts off - then today it was my turn.
This morning it was 3 degrees in town with a nasty wind chill. I'm sure it was approaching -10, but I wore the wrong pants. I put on my new Mizuno pants which are kind of like a dri-fit material so there is a lot of space for wind to pass through. Midway through my first loop, I was really worried about my little buddy. It was cold and the wind was just going right through my pants. By the end of the first loop, I was about to call it quits, but I told myself that the weather was not interfering with my mileage quota. I continued on the second loop and all of a sudden, I wasn't cold anymore. Now my hands started to freeze, and my lower most important extremity was feeling pretty good.
Well, after my run I drove to my parents to change. And as soon as I took my shoes off, the pain hit me. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. Sure, I had an almost frostbite experience at Jingle Run 05, but that was my hands. Nothing can prepare you for this!
I ran to the bathroom to change, but really to hide my pain from my Mom, because I'd be too embarrassed to tell her what the problem was. I pranced around the bathroom trying to warm myself up, but it wasn't working. I stood at the sink and absolutely felt like barfing anywhere. It hurt so bad that I seriously thought I would retch everywhere. But then all of a sudden I was okay and things were fine. At least I hope things are fine!
Anyway the moral of the story is to overdress - ALWAYS!!! I have been wearing a Brooks Runderwear shirt as a base layer for all of my runs in this cold weather, which shows that I am wising up because I normally just wear a long sleeve t-shirt. However, today my theory of wearing a minimum of clothing for maximum movement bit me in the, well you know where it bit me!
