I got to see the race from a different perspective yesterday and I must say I'm both impressed and proud of Team QCS. Jaron, what a dominating performance. That's the best I've ever seen you look in a race, the boys lining up at Marine Corps better be ready for the man from Frostburg. Dave, you looked great and I'm guessing you got Pr's at 5K,10K and 15K, what a super effort. Jeremy, you tore the course apart (setting many PR's as well) and set aside the rumours of not being able to run sub 6 pace for 15k. Rob, another great effort from you. I missed the second half of your race but it had to be a great one judging by who you passed in the latter stages. A truly dominating performance all around. I can't wait to see what you guys do at Marine Corps and New York.

I thought everyone did great in the race. My 5k, 10k, and 15k were all pr's like you thought. It looks like everyone is ready for their marathon. Way to go Jaron on tearing up once again. All the miles have payed off for everyone.

Mike sent me my splits today. I definitely tanked in that last 5k, but a lot of that was "the craps". Thought that I would post my splits and give everyone a run-down of the race.
I definitely was still worried about Gramsky even though word was he just coming off injury. He is very tough and is always a threat at any distance especially the longer stuff. Once again, I was not ready for such a fast start and I found myself playing catch-up to Nick early on. But I was smart about it and worked my way up slowly staying relaxed and then I was right behind at about 1/2 mile in. I was just trying to find a rhythm at this point and stay relaxed and next thing I know, I was on Nick's shoulder. I didn't plan it that way, I think I must have just felt good and ended up finally at "race speed." At one mile, I found myself one step ahead. It wasn't a conscious decision. I was a little faster than what I anticipated at the mile. I was thinking 4:50 or so, but from there the adrenaline took over. I accidentally stopped my watch instead of getting a split. From there I decided to just go for it. I can't say that I wasn't worried that I'd get reeled in. I knew that I was faster than the year before on all the splits and leading on your own in that race can get you caught in the end, but I just went with it in the hopes that I could build up a huge lead.
Mike and Dennis were a huge help on the bikes. Mike was calling out splits and telling me to relax. He would then go back to the mile mark and get Gramsky's splits, then ride up and tell me what kind of a lead I had. AT 1 mile, Nick and I were even. At two, I was up by 11 seconds (which freaked me out big time). Then at three, it had grown to 28 seconds. By mile four, it was 43 seconds (which can still be overcome). At mile 5, the lead was 66 seconds. It seemed that Nick was beginning to tire a little bit and from this point on, Mike didn't go back and get the splits. I figure that I must have looked pretty good to him. I was still worried about getting caught, but the fact that Mike wasn't concerned told me a lot about the kind of day that I was having. Mile 6 to 7 was a tough stretch for me. I began to lose a bit of focus and started looking around at cars . I even began to worry about stepping over drainage grates and some rocks on the road. I had snapped out of that "zone" I was in a mile before. I tried very hard to pick it up from 7 to 8, but I was only marginally faster. Mike told me to relax and was trying to get me to break it up into segments, but it wasn't working. The year previous this is the stretch that I really nailed, but today wasn't the same. My legs were okay up Queen City Drive but I was beginning to battle "mild stomach distress" and that just wasn't pleasant at all. Anyway, I was so excited to win this year. I think that it meant a lot more to win this year than the first time because Gramsky was here and because our running group was so fantastic yesterday! I was just as excited to see those guys finish as I was to round that corner first. Never have I been so proud to be a part of something like that. I owe each and every one of you guys a lot - you've given me some tough runs and you've given me a lot of motivation when I needed it, but mostly you guys have given me a lot of support. It pains me that I can't wear that "QCS" singlet, but I think you guys know that is where my heart belongs! Anyway, great job to all the guys yesterday. Dave - you got to find out how hard it is to run on your own that last 5k. You looked tough coming down the stretch. If that is what you look like finishing our runs at the Depot, I don't know how in the world I keep up sometimes. Jeremy - I think the person that was shocked most yesterday was Ashley. I think the goal was 53 and some change, but you demolished that! You are proof that what you put in is what you get out. Tommy - I'll be honest, we thought that you were crazy to think you could run what you wanted to run, but you can do that! Again, you spent most of the race on your own. You are a 54 guy, maybe even better than that! You showed us all yesterday how tough you truly are. Rob - the beast incarnate. What a race! I know you got nervous when the feared foe stepped off that bus, but you were patient and that is the trait of a good marathoner. Just eat those guys up in the end next time!
So here is what Daniel's book says (based on Spinnler's formula that your average mile pace for GAR is what you could average for 10k).
Myself: 10k = 30:32 Half-marathon conversion = 1:07:31 Marathon conversion = 2:21:00 (the half seems right to me, but the marathon seems a bit fast - I'd say 2:24 at best)
Dave: 10k = 34:09 Half-marathon conversion = 1:15:30 Marathon conversion = 2:37:50 (again the half seems spot on, maybe even a little slow)
Jeremy: 10k = 34:58 Half-marathon conversion = 1:17:30 Marathon conversion = 2:42:10 (spot on for the half)
Rob: 10k = 38:02 Half-marathon conversion = 1:24:18 Marathon conversion = 2:55:50 (half is very close to what Rob ran in the spring)
This is just an estimate from a book. You might run faster for the thon or slower - we'll see on race day, but just as a little indicator, things look good!!!

Mile 1 : 4:46.21 Mile 2 : 9:31.52 (4:45.31) Mile 3: 14:14.84 (4:43.82) Mile 4: 19:01.85 (4:47.01) Mile 5: 23:51.79 (4:49.94) Mile 6: 28:49.24 (4:51.45) 29:54 at 10k Mile 7: 33:56.66 (5:07.42) Mile 8: 39:02.55 (5:05.89) Mile 9: 44:11.96 (5:09.41) Finish: 45:48 (7 seconds faster than last year on a muggy morning - I'm pleased!)

Contrary to popular belief, there must be something to this crazy concept of putting in the miles (who would have thought). It was awesome to see everyone do so well Yesterday. I don't think that we would be where we are now without the group, I know that I wouldn't be. Going into the race, I had no idea what kind of goals to set, so I decided to focus on running comfortably hard and just trying to stay relaxed. It gave me a shot of adrenaline to look up at the leaders before they were out of sight and see Jaron's lead grow with each step, that was amazing to watch. Dave and I talked afterward about how big of a help and a boost it was to have Dennis with us on his bike. He rode between the two of us giving us our splits and shouting encouragement which was great since we were both on our own from close to the start. Great Job gentlemen, let's ride this wave of momentum through Marine Corps and New York, we are ready! My splits were:
Mile 1- 5:15.95 Mile 2- 5:34.96 Mile 3- 5:34.41 5k- 16:59 (PR) Mile 4- 5:36.81 Mile 5- 5:39.01 Mile 6- 5:44:81 10k- 34:30 (PR) Mile 7- 5:49.53 Mile 8- 5:46.00 Mile 9- 5:47.28 Finish- 52:27

I also want to thank dennis for riding with us on the run. It helped out alot. It really kept me motivated to keep pushing to the end.
My splits were:
mile 1- 4:59 mile 2- 10:14 (5:15) new 2-mile pr mile 3- 15:34 (5:19) 5k - 16:03 new pr mile 4- 21:03 (5:28) mile 5- 26:35 (5:32) mile 6- 32:16 (5:40) 10k- i believe around 33:23 (pr) mile 7- did not get. not good at reading mile markers on ground. mile 8- did not get. combined they were 11:32 mile 9- 5:51 (49:39) finish- 51:13

Guys:: That’s how we roll!!!! Chasing after you guys for the last six month definitely paid big dividends. I think Dennis would agree that having this solid group of hungry youth gets these “more senior legs” out on the road ever day. Ok, I have to take off my arm warmers now because I’m on the verge of getting melon collie. See you all Tuesday night.

Great day fellas. You all looked really good. Keep focus on your goal races and you guys will be fine. Make sure to lick your wounds this week, I saw a lot fo you guys hobbling around Saturday after the race.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this race or myself, but overall I'd say I'm pleased. Seeing Rob tracking me down the last mile really helped me push myself to the end. Afterall I know I wouldn't hear the end of it if Rob outkicked me! Seriously though Rob, with no taper for this race and the kind of training you're doing, you should smash 2:55.
